One sometimes sees books with titles like "Python Cookbook" where the book seems to consist of numerous examples of how to solve a variety of problems using that particular programming language. Are there any such books for BASIC? Is BASIC simply to diverse a collection of dialects to permit such a book?

a basic dictionary might be interesting. sort of like my python / basic dictionary but with lots of different dialects.

such a dictionary (if extensive enough) might transform the task of writing a slightly more universal basic cookbook from extraordinarily tedious to fun- you could just write the first draft for one dialect and then expand it using the dictionary.

an "all purpose" language calls for- as much as can possibly be reasonable- an "all purpose" forum. the worst thing happening to modern basic? too many pointless rules and painting everything into corners. most modern basic forums are like that too.

Thanks for the reply - it sounds like a large job!

too large i believe, for any one person to stay interested. if several people liked the idea enough to contribute multiple times, it could happen. other than that it reeks of vaporware. to put it in perspective it would be a larger job that the winter challenge- and that's only for a handful of popular dialects, smaller than the list of dialects he allows for the challenge Smiley

I love the cookbooks. I have too much ADD to read thru a tutorial so I love cookbooks and hack books where I can look up a command or chore to get a very tiny program bit that does just that. I can paste those together and get the job done.

The closest thing Ive ever found for that with Basic is
"Handbook of Quick Basic" by David Schneider
(covers Quick Basic, QBasic, and Basic PDS)

Look up any command and it gives an explanation, simple use, then short example program using it which is always some little program that made me go "oh I want that program also" because they did such useful or fun things. The index was extensive and allowed me to look up a specific use, which led me back to an example at some command I wouldnt have thought to link to that need. Great book. Its now full of little torn paper bookmarks and folded corners of pages.

Drop Basic and learn another programming language?
I do system admining with it, web CGI's with it, program games, whip up
my own little programs for anything I want.
When I find something it wont do then I might make the effort to move.
Until then..... why?
